Biography

Georgia Griffin is a native of Natchez, Mississippi; she was born the seventh child out of fourteen. Her parents moved their family to Chicago in 1968; where Georgia met and married Michael Griffin. They have been married for 42 glorious years and through this union they were blessed with four children (three living) and six grandchildren. She is a member of the Third Baptist Church.     Her love of sports (basketball, volleyball, softball and track) peaked her interest in fitness, which led to an interest in nutrition. She received her diploma in fitness and nutrition in 1992 and in 1998 she became a certified senior fitness specialist and aerobic instructor. In 2011, Mz. Georgia became a certified ZUMBA instructor. She considers teaching seniors to exercise and line dance to be her greatest accomplishment. She is about the business of making a difference in the lives of men and women of all ages. She was blessed with a skill that she considers a gift and she uses it to help others. Her motto is “Don’t Sit, Get Fit, Do It Now’.     Mz. Georgia as she is fondly called is an entrepreneur, fitness specialist, innovator, line dance/zumba instructor and choreographer. As an entrepreneur she has created her own line of T- shirts and DVD’s. She released her first exercise tape in 1996 and in 2008 on the sixteenth day of May she saw a long time dream materialize, she opened Mz. Georgia’s Plaze, her very own dance studio. She has choreographed over 40 dances to date. She has worked with artists such as Omar Cunningham, Willie Clayton, Tyrone Davis (who she choreographed ‘Hot Spot’ for) and Vicki Winans (who she choreographed ‘Shake Yourself Loose’ for); her group has also performed with Vicki Winans.     Mz. Georgia and her group of line dancers have performed in the Bud Billiken parade on several occasions. They can be found performing in such venues as park districts, nursing homes, Chicago Department on Aging, Senior Citizen Housing Complexes, adult day care facilities, weddings, family reunions, church functions, Red Hat Society, sorority parties, etc. They are sought by many to either teach or perform. Her energetic teaching style has taken her to St. Louis, Wisconsin, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Hawaii and Alaska. On February 9, 2011, a resolution was adopted by The City Council of the City of Chicago declaring February 12 as Mz. Georgia Griffin Day.
